It's the first real choice when buying a rotavator, and it decides what ground the machine can handle. Here's the difference between front-tine and rear-tine, and which suits your plot.

Tine position sounds like a detail. It isn't — it's the single biggest thing that decides what a rotavator can do. The question is simple: do the tines pull the machine, or do driven wheels pull it while the tines dig? That's the difference between front-tine and rear-tine, and it maps directly onto the ground each one suits.

Front-tine

The tines sit ahead of the wheels and do double duty — digging and dragging the machine forward. These are lighter, cheaper and more manoeuvrable, ideal for established beds and medium soil. The trade-off: on hard or unbroken ground they tend to bounce, because there's nothing pulling them down into it.

Rear-tine

The wheels are driven and pull the machine along while separate tines at the back do the digging — often counter-rotating for extra bite. These are heavier, pricier and far more capable on compacted or heavy ground, and easier to control because you steer rather than wrestle them.
