Husqvarna TF 338
The TF 338 is Husqvarna's widest front-tine tiller: a Husqvarna-branded 212 cc engine rated 3.6 kW net at 3,100 rpm, with an oil-bath air filter and a fully sealed chain transmission, drives eight 360 mm blades across a 95 cm working width to 30 cm depth at 53-97 rpm, through two forward speeds and one reverse. A rubber wheel kit is included for accessories and moving, the handlebar folds and adjusts vertically, a bumper protects the engine, and Husqvarna quotes 81 kg. Where the TF 338 sits in the Husqvarna range
The TF 338 is the widest machine in Husqvarna's front-tine TF line, and that 95 cm working width is the whole point of it. Lower down, the TF 120, TF 225 and TF 325 work strips of 46 to 60 cm for beds and smaller plots, the TF 230 opens out to 75 cm, and the TF 335 and TF 435P both sit at 80 cm. The rear-tine TR 348 and TR 430 are a different kind of machine altogether: narrower, dearer, and built for breaking ground rather than covering it quickly.
That makes the range easy to read. If your plot is narrow, split into beds or still under turf, the TF 338's width works against you, and a smaller TF or a rear-tine TR is the better buy. If you have a long, open vegetable patch that is turned over every spring, eight 360 mm blades across 95 cm, working to 30 cm deep, will finish it in noticeably fewer runs than an 80 cm machine such as the TF 335.
Living with a 95 cm front-tine tiller
On a front-tine tiller the blades pull the machine along as well as dig, and you control depth and pace by how hard you lean on the handlebar against the drag bar. On soft, maintained soil that is efficient and fairly relaxing. On hard or stony ground the blades climb out and the whole 81 kg machine lurches forward, and with 95 cm of rotor there is more to grab at once. The two forward speeds help: the lower one gives more control in stiffer patches, the higher one moves quickly through loose soil. Reverse matters more than it sounds on a machine this size, because backing out of a fence corner beats dragging 81 kg round by hand.
The sealed chain transmission and oil-bath air filter suggest Husqvarna expects this machine to work in dust and wet, not only in tidy spring soil. An oil-bath filter copes with dusty conditions well, provided you keep the oil at the mark and change it when it turns dirty. Note that the handlebar adjusts vertically only: you cannot swing it to one side to walk beside the worked strip, so on a machine this wide you will be walking on freshly tilled soil.
Buying one in the UK
Our pound figures are converted from Husqvarna Spain's listing, the only official price we found, so treat them as a guide rather than a UK quote. Husqvarna sells through authorised dealers and the TF models offered vary by country, so ask a UK Husqvarna dealer whether the TF 338 is stocked or can be ordered, and compare it with the 80 cm machines before deciding. Plan the transport too: 81 kg needs a van or trailer and either two people or a ramp. The included wheel kit is for moving it around the plot, not for getting it there.
Used TF 338s will be uncommon for a while. If one comes up, check the blades for wear and for wire or bindweed wrapped round the rotor shaft, look for oil weeping where the shaft leaves the transmission, check that the air-filter bath holds clean oil, and run it in both forward speeds and reverse under load. Make sure the wheel kit and bumper come with it, since a missing part of a current model is easy to order but adds to the price.

TF 338 — your questions
Can the Husqvarna TF 338 break up an old lawn or rough ground?
It is not the right tool for that. Like any front-tine tiller it rides up on turf and compacted ground instead of biting, and the 95 cm rotor makes that harder to hold. For a first pass on grass or heavy clay, use a rear-tine machine such as the Husqvarna TR 348 or hire a heavy rotavator, then let the TF 338 do the yearly re-working. Husqvarna TF 338 or TF 335?
Choose the TF 338 if you have one large, open plot and want the widest cut, with eight blades over 95 cm. Choose the TF 335 if you have to lift or transport the machine often or work between beds: at a quoted 58 kg against 81 kg it is much easier to handle, and its 80 cm width is still wide for a front-tine tiller.
